The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance among university students. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 300 undergraduate students from a public university in a major city in China. The participants were asked to complete questionnaires on their sleep quality and academic performance.
The results showed that the majority of the students (60%) reported poor sleep quality, and these students had significantly lower academic performance compared to those with good sleep quality. Specifically, students with poor sleep quality had lower grades, were more likely to fail exams, and reported greater difficulty in concentrating during classes.
Several factors were found to be associated with poor sleep quality, including stress, anxiety, and irregular sleep schedules. Students who reported high levels of stress and anxiety were more likely to have poor sleep quality, which in turn negatively impacted their academic performance.
Interestingly, the study also found that students who engaged in regular physical activity had better sleep quality and academic performance. Those who exercised at least three times a week reported higher grades and were less likely to experience sleep-related problems.
The findings of this study have important implications for university administrators and student support services. It suggests that addressing sleep-related issues among university students could potentially improve their academic success. Interventions such as sleep hygiene education, stress management programs, and the promotion of physical activity may be effective in enhancing sleep quality and, consequently, academic performance.
Future research should explore the longitudinal relationship between sleep quality and academic performance, as well as the potential mediating factors that may influence this relationship. Additionally, studies in other cultural contexts would help to determine the generalizability of these findings.
In conclusion, the present study highlights the importance of prioritizing sleep health among university students. By promoting better sleep habits and addressing factors that contribute to poor sleep quality, universities can potentially support their students in achieving greater academic success.
